| We
spend one third of our lives sleeping and it is only recently
in the last 30-40 years that we started to gain insight
into the mechanics and function’s of sleep. Interests
in sleep and dreams have existed since the dawn of history
but the scientific study of sleep is a new concept. Having
being able to define normal sleep it then became apparent
that there were people who had abnormal sleep. To date
there are over 90 different sleep disorders that can affect
patients. Sleep disorders are extremely common, some of
these are trivial, but most of them product distressing
symptoms for the patient and a few can be fatal. It has
been published that 54% of men and 61% of women suffer
from insomnia (difficulty in sleeping).
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which is
the common cause of daytime sleepiness, occurs in less
than 5% of the population. Milnerton Sleep Clinic has
the capacity for investigating sleep disorders and to
render a good service to the local communities as well
as those from further afield. For most of the sleep disorders,
we diagnose and effective treatment is available, to improve
quality of life for patients and also to prevent potential
serious complications that can arise with some sleep disorders. The
Milnerton Sleep Clinic currently concentrates on Sleep
Apnea but works closely with other specialist dedicated
to Insomnia, Narcolepsy and drug related Sleep Disorders.

Not everyone who has sleep apnea has these symptoms.
And not everyone who has these symptoms has sleep
